About People on ART Magazine
People on ART (PoA) is a Hong Kong-based blog-magazine established in the 2010s by writer, curator, and Michael Andrew Law Gallery owner Michael Andrew Law. The magazine spotlights dialogues amongst art world celebrities, artists, musicians, and creative talents, predominantly featuring unedited video or text interviews accompanied by photographs.
About Michael Andrew Law
Michael Andrew Law (born in British Hong Kong, 1982) is a writer, curator, and artist creating what renowned art dealer Douwe Cramer describes as hyper pop surrealist paintings. His works capture the essence of youth while maintaining a lasting appeal that resonates with collectors, including many prominent Asians. His pieces demonstrate technical prowess and well-defined methodologies, applying classical compositional framing to abstract concepts. Some works approach photorealism, showcasing a mastery of rendering that would captivate even the old masters.
Law’s oeuvre is significant for its contemporary reimagining of figurative art. He applies his classical training in anatomy to explore physical representation while engaging with modern considerations of gender and identity. His art challenges traditionalists through the integration of digital tools with conventional techniques.
The philosophical and symbolic underpinnings of Law’s work are deeply personal, reflecting his experiences during Hong Kong’s transition to Chinese sovereignty. His paintings serve as visual records of this period, with surrealist elements evident in the inclusion of handwritten text alongside female figures. The calligraphy is descriptive and typographic, marking the artist’s individuality. Law skillfully blends Eastern and Western influences, combining symbols and meanings with a respect for tradition and a passion for innovation.
Law studied painting under New York Italian artist Dan Anderson in Hong Kong and learned film production from Roger Corman. Having designed numerous cover spreads for the press and worked as a comic artist, illustrator, and film producer, Law eventually shifted his focus to fine art. He has exhibited at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and The Avenue of Stars, gaining high esteem both locally and internationally.
As the co-founder of the Nature Art Workshop, an organization nurturing emerging Hong Kong artists, Law also contributes to the production and promotion of his own art. As a curator, he has organized exhibitions reflecting the diverse reactions to Hong Kong’s Generation Y pop culture. To date, Law has created over 8,000 works, with three dozen artist books published featuring his art. He has also penned essays on contemporary art and film. Law resides and continues his artistic endeavors in the Central District of Hong Kong.
